Biggest Texas Lottery Winners Ever

A Massive Lottery Market

As the second most populous state in the country, Texas has one of the largest lottery markets in America. Millions of tickets are sold for every major drawing, which means Texas retailers statistically produce more than their share of big winners. The state has generated numerous nine-figure prizes across Powerball, Mega Millions, and its own Lotto Texas game.

Lotto Texas Records

The state's flagship game, Lotto Texas (6/54), has produced some impressive jackpots over its three-decade history. The largest Lotto Texas prize reached $97.4 million in November 2004, one of the biggest state-only lottery jackpots ever awarded. Lotto Texas jackpots regularly climb above $20 million during extended rollovers, and the game has created thousands of millionaires since its 1992 launch. With jackpot odds of about 1 in 25.8 million, Lotto Texas produces winners far more frequently than national games.

Texas Two Step: Best Jackpot Odds in the Country

While its jackpots start at a modest $200,000, Texas Two Step has produced hundreds of jackpot winners since its launch — far more per capita than any other jackpot game. With odds of roughly 1 in 1.8 million, a player is about 160 times more likely to hit the Texas Two Step jackpot than Powerball. The game draws Monday and Thursday nights, and jackpots that roll over a few times can reach $2-3 million. For players who want the experience of winning a jackpot, Texas Two Step offers the most realistic path.

The Tax Advantage

What makes winning in Texas especially valuable is the state's zero percent income tax. While winners in New York face effective tax rates exceeding 50% when federal, state, and city taxes combine, Texas winners pay only federal taxes — roughly 24% withholding on prizes over $5,000, with the top marginal rate at 37% for income above $609,350. On a $10 million prize, a Texas winner takes home approximately $1.5-2 million more than a New York City winner. Anonymous Claiming

Since a 2017 law change, Texas allows lottery winners to claim prizes anonymously through trusts or LLCs. This is a significant advantage — many financial advisors consider public identification the single biggest risk factor for lottery winners, as it invites unsolicited requests, scams, and safety concerns. Texas winners who set up a trust before claiming can keep their identity completely private. Not all states offer this option; California, for example, requires public identification of all jackpot winners.

How to Claim

Texas winners have 180 days from the drawing date to claim prizes. Prizes of $599 or less can be claimed at any Texas Lottery retailer. Prizes from $600 to $999,999 can be claimed at any of the 16 Texas Lottery claim centers across the state. Prizes of $1 million or more must be claimed at Texas Lottery headquarters in Austin.
