What the Hot Map Shows
The National Hot Map renders the contiguous United States as a choropleth (filled region) map where each state's fill color encodes lottery digit heat intensity. It is built on real-time data from every state's analytics and gives you a geographic perspective on lottery patterns that a table or list cannot provide. Geographic clustering — when neighboring states share similar hot/cold patterns — becomes immediately visible on the map in a way it never would in a ranked list.
The map covers all 43 states (plus DC) in the app's database. States with insufficient data to compute a reliable heat score are displayed in a neutral gray.
Reading the Map Colors
The color scale runs from dark blue (very cold) through white or light gray (neutral) to dark orange/red (very hot). Specifically:
- Dark red / deep orange: That state has digits performing significantly above expected frequency — intense hot activity.
- Light orange / warm neutral: Mildly above expected frequency — moderately hot.
- White / light gray: Near expected frequency — no strong hot or cold signal.
- Light blue: Mildly below expected frequency — moderately cold.
- Dark blue: Significantly below expected frequency — intense cold activity.
A legend at the side or bottom of the map shows the full color scale with corresponding hotness scores.
Selecting a Digit to Track
By default the map shows the composite hotness of all digits combined — essentially, how active the state's lottery has been overall. To focus on a single digit, use the digit selector buttons (labeled 0 through 9) above the map. Clicking "7" re-colors the map to show only how hot digit 7 is in each state's Pick 3 and Pick 4 draws. This is powerful for tracking whether a specific digit you like is hot or cold in the state where you're buying tickets.
Composite vs Single-Digit View
The toggle switch at the top of the map lets you switch between Composite view (aggregated across all digits and games) and Single-Digit view (one digit at a time). Composite view is better for identifying states with high overall lottery activity levels. Single-digit view is better for researching a specific number you are considering playing across multiple states.
Geographic Clustering
One of the most interesting things to watch for on the map is regional clusters — groups of adjacent states that share a similar color. This can occur by statistical chance but persistent clusters across multiple time windows are worth noting. For example, if the northeastern states consistently show digit 3 running hot while the southeastern states show it cold, that is a geographic pattern the map makes immediately visible. Use the Compare States tool to drill deeper into any two adjacent states you notice clustering together.
Navigating to State Detail
Clicking any state on the map navigates directly to that state's analytics dashboard. From there, you can view that state's full digit frequency charts, hot/cold rankings, patterns, predictions, and all other analytics tools. The map is designed as a discovery and navigation layer — use it to find interesting states, then dive into the per-state tools for detailed analysis.
