Overdue Numbers in the Maryland Lottery: Gap Analysis for Every Game

What Makes a Number "Overdue"?

A number is considered overdue when its gap — the number of consecutive draws since it last appeared — exceeds the expected average gap for that game. The expected average gap is calculated as the total number pool divided by how many numbers are drawn per drawing. When a number's current gap is significantly above that average, it shows up on overdue lists and cold number trackers.

Important: being overdue does not mean a number is "due" to hit. Each draw is independent, and past gaps have no influence on future outcomes. This is a common misconception known as the Gambler's Fallacy. Gap analysis is a descriptive tool — it tells you what has happened, not what will happen.

Bonus Match 5 (5/39 + Bonus Ball from 1-39)

Bonus Match 5 draws daily, producing roughly 365 draws per year. With 5 numbers drawn from a pool of 39, the expected average gap for any single number is approximately 8 draws (39 / 5 = 7.8). A number becomes notably cold when its gap exceeds 20 draws — roughly two and a half times the average. The Bonus Ball is drawn separately from the same 1-39 pool, so its expected gap for any specific number is 39 draws.

Multi-Match (6/43, Monday and Thursday)

Multi-Match draws twice per week, producing roughly 104 draws per year. With 6 numbers drawn from 1-43, the expected average gap is approximately 7 draws (43 / 6 = 7.2). A number crosses into cold territory at roughly 18+ draws without appearing. Because Multi-Match only draws twice a week, cold streaks can span months in calendar time even though the draw count gap may seem modest.

Powerball (5/69 + 1/26)

Powerball draws three times per week. With 5 numbers from a pool of 69, the expected average gap for a main ball is approximately 14 draws (69 / 5 = 13.8). Numbers become notably cold at 40+ draws without appearing. The Powerball bonus ball (1-26 pool, 1 drawn) has an expected gap of 26 draws, and anything above 60 is deeply overdue.

Mega Millions (5/70 + 1/25)

Mega Millions draws twice per week. The expected average gap for a main ball is approximately 14 draws (70 / 5 = 14). Cold threshold sits around 40+ draws. The Mega Ball (1-25 pool) has an expected gap of 25 draws, with 55+ being deeply overdue.

Pick 3, Pick 4, and Pick 5 (Digit Games)

Digit games work differently from ball-draw games. Each position independently draws a digit from 0-9, so the expected gap for any specific digit in any position is 10 draws. With twice-daily drawings producing 700+ draws per year, gaps move fast. A digit that has not appeared in a specific position for 25+ draws is notably overdue. Digit-level gap analysis is most useful when broken down by position rather than looking at the number as a whole.

How to Check Overdue Numbers

Use our Hot & Cold Numbers tool to see current gaps for every number in your selected Maryland game. The cold column shows numbers with the longest active gaps, ranked from most overdue to least. Pair this with the Frequency Analysis tool for a longer-term historical view of how often each number has appeared.
