Overdue Numbers in the Massachusetts Lottery: Gap Analysis by Game

What Makes a Number "Overdue"?

A number is considered overdue when its gap — the count of consecutive draws in which it did not appear — exceeds the statistically expected average gap for that game. The expected average gap is calculated with a simple formula:

Expected Gap = Pool Size / Balls Drawn Per Draw

For example, in a 5-from-35 game (Mass Cash), the expected gap for any single number is 35 / 5 = 7 draws. If a number has gone 18 or more draws without appearing, it is well above baseline and considered cold or overdue. This does not mean the number is "due" to appear — each draw is independent — but tracking gaps can reveal which numbers are currently underrepresented relative to their long-term averages.

Megabucks Doubler (6 from 49)

With 6 balls drawn from a pool of 49, the expected average gap is approximately 49 / 6 = 8 draws. Megabucks Doubler runs three times per week (Monday, Wednesday, Saturday), producing roughly 156 draws per year.

Because the pool-to-balls ratio is moderate (8:1), individual numbers cycle through relatively quickly. Extended absences of 20+ draws stand out clearly in the data.

Mass Cash (5 from 35)

Mass Cash draws twice daily, generating approximately 730 results per year. The expected gap is 35 / 5 = 7 draws.

The high draw frequency means numbers that go cold stand out quickly. A number missing for 18 draws in Mass Cash represents only about 9 days of real time, but it is already more than double the expected gap.

Millionaire for Life (5 from 58 + Millionaire Ball 1-5)

For the main pool, the expected gap is 58 / 5 = approximately 12 draws. The Millionaire Ball pool is much smaller at 1 through 5, with 1 ball drawn, giving an expected gap of 5 draws. The game runs daily, producing about 365 draws per year.

Powerball (5 from 69 + Powerball 1-26)

The main pool expected gap is 69 / 5 = approximately 14 draws. With three draws per week, that baseline translates to roughly 5 weeks between appearances for any given number.

Mega Millions (5 from 70 + Mega Ball 1-25)

Similar to Powerball, the main pool expected gap is 70 / 5 = 14 draws. Mega Millions draws twice per week (Tuesday, Friday).

How to Track Overdue Numbers

Use the Hot & Cold Numbers tool to see which numbers are currently running above or below their expected frequency. The cold list highlights numbers with the longest active gaps. Pair this with the Frequency Analysis tool to view historical hit rates and spot numbers that are both infrequent and currently absent.

The Gambler's Fallacy Caveat

Every draw is statistically independent. A number that has been absent for 40 draws is no more likely to appear in the next draw than one that hit last week. The gap analysis tells you what has happened, not what will happen. It is a descriptive tool, not a predictive one.
