Overdue Numbers in the Colorado Lottery: Lotto+, Cash 5, Powerball & More

What Makes a Number "Overdue"?

An overdue number is one that has not appeared in more draws than its statistical average gap. The average gap for any number is the total pool size divided by how many numbers are drawn each game. When a number's current gap — the number of consecutive draws since it last appeared — exceeds 2-3 times the average, players often label it "cold" or "overdue." This metric is useful for identifying numbers that have deviated from expected frequency, but it's critical to understand what it does and does not tell you.

Colorado Lotto+ (6/40, Wed & Sat)

Colorado Lotto+ draws 6 numbers from a pool of 40, giving each number a 6/40 = 15% chance of appearing in any given draw. The average gap is about 6.7 draws. With approximately 104 draws per year (twice weekly), a Lotto+ number absent for 18+ draws is entering cold territory. At 25+, it's well past the statistical baseline. The random multiplier doesn't affect which numbers are drawn, only the prize amounts — so frequency analysis applies normally to Lotto+.

Cash 5 (5/32, Daily)

Cash 5 draws 5 numbers from a pool of 32, giving each number a 5/32 = 15.6% chance per draw. The average gap is about 6.4 draws. With daily drawings producing 365 draws per year, Cash 5 generates excellent data volume for gap analysis. A number absent for 16+ draws is entering cold territory, and at 20+ draws it's significantly overdue. The daily schedule means meaningful patterns emerge within just a few weeks of data.

Millionaire for Life (5/58 + 1/5, Mon/Wed/Fri)

Millionaire for Life draws 5 from 58 in the main pool, giving each number a 5/58 = 8.6% chance per draw. The average gap is about 11.6 draws. With three drawings per week (~156 per year), a main-pool number absent for 30+ draws is entering overdue territory. The Life Ball (1-5) has a 1-in-5 chance each draw with an average gap of 5, so any Life Ball absent for 12+ draws is cold — though with only 5 possible values, short-term streaks are common.

Powerball (5/69 + 1/26)

In Powerball's main pool, 5 balls are drawn from 69, giving each number a 1-in-13.8 chance per draw. The average gap is roughly 14 draws. With three drawings per week (about 156 per year), a main-pool number absent for 40+ draws is well into overdue territory. The Powerball bonus ball (1-26) appears once per draw, so its average gap is 26 draws — a Powerball number not seen in 60+ draws is significantly cold.

Mega Millions (5/70 + 1/25)

Mega Millions draws 5 from 70, giving each number a 1-in-14 chance. The average gap is about 14 draws, very similar to Powerball. With roughly 104 draws per year (Tuesday and Friday), a number absent for 40+ draws is overdue. The Mega Ball (1-25) appears once per draw with an average gap of 25 — cold at 55+ draws absent.

Pick 3 (Digit Game, Twice Daily)

Pick 3 is a digit game where each position draws independently from 0-9. With 10 possible digits per position and 730+ draws per year, each digit has a 1-in-10 chance per position per draw. The average gap is about 10 draws. A digit absent from a specific position for 25+ draws is cold, but given the high draw frequency, streaks are quickly corrected by volume. Digit games are best analyzed at the position level rather than looking at numbers as a whole.

The Gambler's Fallacy Caveat

Overdue analysis is a pattern-recognition tool, not a prediction engine. Each draw is statistically independent — the lottery machine does not "remember" which numbers are due. A number that has been absent for 50 draws is no more likely to appear in the next draw than one that appeared yesterday. This is the Gambler's Fallacy, and it's the most common misconception in lottery analytics. Use overdue data to understand historical distribution, not to predict future outcomes.

How to Check Overdue Numbers

Use our Hot & Cold Numbers tool to see which numbers are currently cold for any Colorado game. The tool ranks every number by recency and frequency, showing exact gap counts and how they compare to the statistical baseline. For deeper analysis, the Frequency Analysis tool lets you filter by date range and draw time to spot numbers that are overdue in specific windows. You can also backtest cold-number strategies against historical data.
