Biggest Pennsylvania Lottery Winners: Notable Jackpots and Claims

A Massive Lottery Market

As the 5th most populous state, Pennsylvania generates enormous lottery sales and has produced its share of headline-grabbing jackpot winners. The state's participation in both Powerball and Mega Millions means PA residents have access to the largest prize pools in North American lottery history.

Multi-State Jackpot Wins

Pennsylvania has seen multiple Powerball and Mega Millions jackpot wins over the years. The state's large player base and high ticket volume make it a frequent source of major prize claims. PA winners have claimed prizes ranging from tens of millions to hundreds of millions of dollars in the multi-state games. Every major Powerball or Mega Millions drawing includes millions of tickets sold across Pennsylvania's extensive retail network.

Match 6 Lotto Jackpots

PA's in-state Match 6 Lotto regularly produces millionaire winners. Because each $2 ticket includes three lines of 6 numbers from 1-49, players get triple the combinations compared to a standard single-line lotto ticket. This unique format means Match 6 jackpots are won more frequently than similarly sized games in other states, though the jackpot (starting at $500,000) can still grow to several million dollars during extended roll periods.

Tax Treatment for PA Winners

Pennsylvania is one of the more favorable states for lottery winners when it comes to taxes. The state applies a flat 3.07% tax on lottery winnings, regardless of the prize amount. Combined with the standard 24% federal withholding, PA winners face an effective tax rate of approximately 27%. For comparison, New York winners pay over 35% in combined taxes, and California does not tax lottery winnings at all. After Texas (0%) and Florida (0%), PA's rate is among the lowest for states that do tax winnings. See a deeper breakdown in our tax-free lottery states guide.

Claiming Prizes in Pennsylvania

PA Lottery winners have one year from the draw date to claim their prize. Prizes of $600 or more can be claimed at the Pennsylvania Lottery headquarters in Middletown or at any of the 9 regional lottery offices across the state. Prizes under $600 can be claimed at any PA Lottery retailer. For prizes of $600 and above, winners must complete a claim form and provide valid identification.

Lottery winners are generally public record in Pennsylvania — the winner's name and hometown are typically disclosed. Players who want to remain anonymous should consult a legal advisor before claiming, as Pennsylvania does not currently offer a blanket anonymity option for lottery winners.
