How Rolling Cash 5 Works
Rolling Cash 5 is Ohio's daily ball-draw game. Pick 5 numbers from 1 to 39 and match them to the 5 numbers drawn each evening at approximately 7:05 PM ET. Tickets cost $1 per play. The game is available at all Ohio Lottery retailers.
The Rolling Jackpot
Rolling Cash 5 features a rolling jackpot that starts at $100,000 and grows with each drawing that produces no top-prize winner. Unlike fixed-prize games, the jackpot continues to increase until someone matches all 5 numbers. Jackpots typically roll to $200,000-$500,000 before being won, though larger accumulations are possible during extended cold streaks.
Prize Tiers
- Match 5 of 5: Jackpot (rolling, starts at $100,000)
- Match 4 of 5: $500
- Match 3 of 5: $10
- Match 2 of 5: $1
The overall odds of winning any prize are approximately 1 in 8.
Jackpot Odds
The odds of matching all 5 numbers from a pool of 39 are 1 in 575,757. This is calculated as C(39,5) = 575,757. These odds are dramatically better than any jackpot game — you're roughly 500 times more likely to win Rolling Cash 5 than Powerball.
How Rolling Cash 5 Compares to Other States
Several states offer similar 5-ball games, but the number pools and prize structures vary:
- Rolling Cash 5 (OH): 5/39 — 1 in 575,757 — rolling jackpot starting at $100K
- Fantasy 5 (CA): 5/39 — 1 in 575,757 — pari-mutuel top prize (typically $75K-$200K+)
- Take 5 (NY): 5/39 — 1 in 575,757 — pari-mutuel (minimum $57,575)
- Fantasy 5 (FL): 5/36 — 1 in 376,992 — pari-mutuel (typically $50K-$200K+)
- Cash Five (TX): 5/35 — 1 in 324,632 — fixed $25,000 top prize
Ohio, California, and New York all share the exact same 5/39 format, which means the same jackpot odds. The key difference is Ohio's rolling jackpot structure, which can push prizes well above the typical pari-mutuel payouts in CA and NY. Florida and Texas use smaller pools, giving better odds but generally smaller top prizes.
Why Rolling Cash 5 Is Popular
Daily drawings mean daily chances to win. The 1-in-575,757 jackpot odds are manageable enough that regular players see the game as winnable within a human timeframe. And the rolling jackpot adds excitement — the longer the game goes without a winner, the larger the prize grows. For many Ohio players, Rolling Cash 5 hits the sweet spot between digit games (high frequency, small prizes) and big jackpot games (rare wins, huge prizes).
