State Games vs. National Games
While Powerball (1 in 292 million) and Mega Millions (1 in 302 million) get the headlines, state-specific lottery games often offer dramatically better jackpot odds. The trade-off is smaller jackpots, but your probability of winning can be 100x better.
Best Odds Among 5-Ball Games
Games that draw 5 numbers from smaller pools offer the sweet spot of reasonable jackpots with achievable odds. California's Fantasy 5 (5/39, odds of 1 in 575,757) and New York's Take 5 (5/39, same odds) are among the best. Florida's Fantasy 5 (5/36) offers even better odds at roughly 1 in 376,992. Texas Cash Five (5/35) is similar at approximately 1 in 325,000.
Best Odds Among 6-Ball Games
Traditional 6-ball lotto games have longer odds but still far better than national games. New York Lotto (6/59) has odds of about 1 in 45 million — long, but over 6x better than Powerball. Florida Lotto (6/53) comes in at about 1 in 23 million. These games regularly produce six and seven-figure jackpots.
Daily Games: The Best Odds of All
If pure probability matters most to you, daily digit games have the best odds in any state lottery. Pick 3 straight bets have odds of 1 in 1,000, and Pick 4 straight bets are 1 in 10,000. Prizes are fixed and modest ($500 for Pick 3, $5,000 for Pick 4 typically), but the odds are in a completely different category from ball-draw games.
The Tax Factor
Odds aren't the only consideration — tax-free states like California, Florida, and Texas let winners keep more of their prizes. A $1 million win in New York City could net you less than $500,000 after all taxes, while the same win in Florida yields over $600,000.
